Oliver the Foodie…The CoffeeHouse

There are places in our daily lives where we do some of our best work.  That can be anywhere really and it is up to each and everyone to decide that.  It can be your bedroom, the office, the den, the park, and or the coffeehouse.

Nostalgia and just about anyone that romanticizes about doing some writing at one time or another will picture themselves sitting in a coffeehouse sipping a latte as they work on their next masterpiece.  I’m pretty confident that you might have this same picture in your head when I mentioned coffeehouse.  The aroma and sounds of the clinging glasses and the sound of pressure of the espresso machine producing the elixir of caffeination that fuel many creatives, businesses, and thought thinkers throughout the day.  But have you ever wondered why?  Why do so many people romanticize and flock to such places as a coffeehouse?  I don’t have an answer for you but my theory is that some go to be seen and others go because it truly is the place where their masterpieces are created.  I believe in the latter.

Coffeehouses have such an appeal in our lifestyle these days.  Just look at the number of coffeehouses you see.  Look around they are everywhere.  Starbucks for one is at every corner, every nook and cranny of this world.  So there is something about coffeehouses.

There is even an app called Coffitivity, that allows you to be a coffeehouse anywhere anytime.  You can now partially share the coffeehouse with this app.  I have used the app and I have enjoyed it.  The app works by playing the ambient sounds of coffeehouses, which if you do like the “white noise” of coffeehouse can work well for you.  I do admit that I use it when I’m at work so can I get work done and disconnect for my cubicle.  Sometimes you just have too.  The one thing though that it lack from its real counterpart is the smells of a coffeehouse.  But it is a great substitute for one until you head off to your favorite coffeehouse.

What’s your favorite coffeehouse?  It’s okay if you say Starbucks.  I’m not going to judge you.  I do have part take in Starbucks.  For a good three years and still here and there, I went to Starbucks daily Monday through Friday just so I can get my coffee fix and so I can be like all the working peeps around the world.  However as of late, my coffee places have changed.  What I have done lately is go to more local coffeehouses.  The places that you can only find here in good old San Diego.  To me these places are the true places where creativity comes alive.  They have character, they have charm, and its the place the locals hang out.  Of the local joints, my favorite of them all is the Coffee and Tea Collective on El Cajon Blvd in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego.

Coffee And Tea Collective Storefront

I make it a habit to go here at least once a week.  I traditionally like to go here on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  For me, its the time that I have scheduled for myself to have some “me” time.  It is the hour or two that I have just for myself.  It is the time that I get to collect my thoughts, write my list, converse with others, do some catch up, or write a blog post (I’m not writing this particular one there).  But it is the time and place that I have just for myself.  Which to me is important.  I believe that everyone has to make time for that.  It’s not being selfish but it is the time that everyone needs so that they can recollect themselves.  You can’t do anything for yourself or others if you yourself are not happy.  So you have to find and schedule that time, whether it be in the a coffeehouse or not.  But you NEED to DO IT.

Coffee and Tea Collective Cold Brew Growler

For me the Coffee and Tea Collective is the place that I go and do that.  The reason that I like it there is because the coffeehouse is a welcoming place.  I really enjoy the minimalist designed space.  It’s clean and organized, not too much clutter, and there is always artwork that is going in and out of the space.  Secondly the people that work there are simply the friendliest people around.  They all know you by name, especially when you become one of the regulars.  They enjoy your company.  They have fun always smiling and always joking around.  And they all take pride in their work and coffee that they make for you.  And a coffeehouse isn’t complete without the coffee.  The Coffee and Tea Collective makes and roasts their own coffee in house.  Everything is made, measured, and served in house.  They make coffee and teas.  Their menu is small but there’s something there for everyone.  My favorite thing on their menu is their Cold Brew coffee.  It is by far the best cold brew around.  I’m pretty sure it’s popular because a few months ago they started a cold crew growler refill program.  You can now go to Coffee and Tea and get your 32oz or 64oz cold brew growler filled and refilled with them.  See it’s that good!  So if you are ever find yourself in North Park (San Diego), give Coffee and Tea Collective a try.  And get their cold brew.

But what this post comes down to is find a place that works for you.  Find that place or thing that you do for your “me” time.  It’s important to do that.  Trust me.

Planning and Coffee… Oliver the Photographer, the ideamaker

Today was planning day with Hollie.  We were planning and plotting out the day that I would help her photograph her first booked wedding.  As a friend and fellow photographer I was happy to help her.  It’s cool to see a friend graduate to this level in photography.  When I first met Hollie, she didn’t know what aperture, shutter, and iso was and hot they relate to each other.  And it was after our first hang out that see made the jump to manual.  And ever since then I have watched her consistently improve and make so much progress.  She definatly has made the leap from hobbyist to professional.  This wedding that I am helping her plan will be her first booked wedding that she booked last year and it finally arrived.

The wedding will take place at the Jolla Cove area in the La Jolla Bridge clubhouse.  Hollie and I headed over to La Jolla Cove to do the planning.  However it being summer meant that there would be crowds and surely we were right.  But what made things even more interesting was that there was the La Jolla Coast Music concerts going on at the same time which ensured there was a lot of people in the park where the wedding was to take place.  So our first concern was how to make sure that Aarron and Erin would have a private imtimate wedding and we would be able to do our photography as intended.

While we where at the La Jolla Bridge club, Hollie and I worked out and reviewed the schedule to make sure that we got everything covered.  It was cool to collaborate with her.  But for myself, I wanted to make sure that she knew that it was her wedding and I was there to assist her with whatever she needed me to do to help here out.  I was more than happy to give her my opinion as long as it was ask but I wanted to make sure that I didn’t step on any toes.

After reviewing a few spots around the bridge club we headed over to the next location to do some scouting.  Since this wedding had a first look componenet, it was vitale that we found a place that would work for this momentious event.  It would be the first time that the bride and groom would see each other.  At first we thought the hotel where they were getting ready would work however we found out that there is a wedding already taking place atop the roof which we thought would be a perfect spot to do the first look.  But no worries, Hollie and I found a spot about 1/4 block away in a access walkway that was private and lovely.  This location would be ideal because it would the bride and groom the opportunity to be with each other before the ceremony and with family and friends.

So after we found this place we discovered that it was close to 4pm which is the time that Hollie needed to get back to her place so that she could head off to a birthday party.  And off we went.  Looks like we will be doing some more homework for this wedding coming up again.

After I dropped off Hollie,  I didn’t feel like heading home just yet, so I called up my friend Dave to see what he was up too.  Turns out he had a busy day at home doing some organization, cleaning, and editing.  So hearing that and me wanting something else to do after the scouting I asked if he would like to grab some coffee.  And he said sure.  So I head over to he’s place to grab him and we went to get some coffee and for me dessert.

When coffee and dessert was done I headed home to do more work and burn dvds for the HOBY kids.  I got another 14 DVD burned and ready to be mailed for the next day.  And the rest of the evening was just spent resting and relaxing before another work day ahead.

Relax and Chat… Oliver the Foodie, the Friend, the Photographer

Another week has gone by once again.  If you didn’t guess today was Friday.

On the work front all is good, stress is low today it was just another day in the office.  The only thing I had to do that was out of the ordinary was that I once again had to make some modifications to the right way limits and easements that I had submitted last month.  This change was due to the comments that received from another agency that we are working with.  And since we are fast approaching our project deadline this needed to be made.

After work was completed I head over to BMW of San Diego for a checkup on my car.  Earlier in the week the check oil light came on and I thought I wasn’t due for a oil change for awhile.  But being cautious, I decided that it was best just to take it in and have it looked at.  When I arrived, I dropped off my car, handed off the keys, and headed to the waiting room.  Gosh, sounds like a hospital.  LOL.  While I was waiting there I wrote yesterday’s post on my iPhone which I find cool and interesting that I now write more than ever.  I’m still trying to get use to the fact that I don’t have a piece of paper with me all of the time but I think I can get over it.  🙂  It had been 20 minutes since my schedule appointment before the advisor saw me but arrived with good news.  The good news was that nothing was won with my car except that the fluids needed to be top off.  I asked how much that would cost and they said it free of charge.  So they took care of me there.  And while I was getting my car topped off I had a good conversation with one of the technicians there.  Having this conversation reminded of a post that I read from photographer Eric O’Connor who talked about customer service and reminded us to make it about the customer.  In my humble opinion my dealership was just doing that.

When the car was completed I headed grocery store to purchase the ingredients for dinner.  Today’s dinner was Chicken Adobe.  Chicken Adobe is one my go to dinner to make because it easy to make, no fuss, and full of flavor.  I headed to my local Vons to get the ingredients.  Once the ingredients were in hand, I headed home to start cooking.  Prep took about 5 minutes.  And then I just let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

While dinner was cooking I decided to do some work on the HOBY packages that I have been working on.  So the DVD burning began with another round of DVDs being burned.  I think I will need to find a way to work this out for a faster return because this burning of DVD one at a time is not working.

Now with dinner cooked, it being hot, and it being Friday, I figure it would be a good time to hang out with my buddy Dave and have some dessert.  So I chatted with him via the internets and decided that dessert was in the plans.  Today’s dessert was a mix of Ice Cream and Coffee.

Around 8pm, I headed over to Dave’s place to get him.  It was 8pm because we both had some work to do that we wanted to complete beforehand.  We knew that if we hung out we would chat for a couple of hours so we might as well get some work done before we head out.  When I got Dave it was decided that we would try something new that we haven’t been too or at least a place that Dave has not tried out yet.  Today’s new place was Moo Time Creamery.

Getting some Ice Cream with @davidjcrewe #hangout #foodie

Moo Time Creamery is another one of my favorite places to get ice cream in town.  All of the ice cream is just homemade and made everyday, and every flavor is seasonal.  Another reason that I like going there is that it is in Coronado.  Coronado is the typical small town American town located right in our backyard.  So when I go to Moo Time it is an opportunity to get that feeling of nostalgia.  Moo Time is definitely decorated in the 1950s ice cream parlor style.  The palor is decorated with a checkerboard pattern tile floor, old fashion soda machine with unique soda flavors, and on one wall many of the accolades that it has gotten over the years adorns one wall.  And from the ceiling hangs a kids plane rider.

Flight of fancy... #mootime

Summer Treat.. #foodie

The ice cream here comes in many varieties and you’ll have to come to see what is available.  I got the toasted Coconut and Mango Sherbet today.  I was feeling a tropical this evening.  Dave got their Double Dark Chocolate and the Coconut.  As tradition follows, I usually pick up the tab when my friends go to one of my favorite places for the first time.  After getting our Ice Cream sat and chatted for a bit.

When our Ice Cream was happily consumed we headed for part two of the evening which was coffee.  Today’s coffee stop was Cafe Vero in Mission Hills.  Coffee was a nice way to close off the evening.  With coffee in hand we grab a sit out and just chatted about all thing photography.  One of the cool things that we discussed about was that we should definitely try to get an office space for ourselves for the photography.  Which these days, i’m seriously considering more and more because I would like to up the feel and look of my photography company.  So that this point only time will tell.  Hopefully this will happen sooner than later.  We finished up around midnight and headed home.  Good times, good discussion, and a good evening.  🙂

Coffee, Photography, & Sushi… Oliver the Writer, the Photographer, the Foodie

Yesterday I had a great pleasure to attend a photography business workshop. The workshop was insightful, informative, and fun.

The time leading up to the workshop was awesome. I actually got off work early enough that I was able to complete a few of my task that I wanted to complete today. The first and foremost pressing task was to get another batch of HOBY DVDs out to the kids. So with all of the work that I did the night before I was eager to get them sent off to the kids. Hopefully next week the kids will receive their packages.

After mailing off the package I saw that I still had some ample time so I decided to head over to the bank to cash in my monthly paycheck. I didn’t go I my normal bank because I wasn’t going home because of the photography meeting so I went to the closest one to work. It was cool heading over there and cashing my check. And getting my check was a little delayed because when they are passes out the check I was a meeting so therefore I couldn’t get my check. And the reason for the not getting my check is because I am one of the few people that doesn’t have direct deposit. I honestly didn’t get direct deposit because they was a cute teller at my bank that I liked and so I would always get her to cash in my check. What can I say other than, I’m only human. But unfortunately she has since moved from bank to bank. It’s been all of the same bank but the branches are not too close so he moves to different one every once in awhile which makes it hard to predict if she will be there when I cash my check.

Well after cashing in my check I looked at the clock and I saw that I had some time still so I decided to get some coffee at a place that I have been wanting to try out. So I checked the traffic via Waze and made my way to place.  After driving up via Washington Street, I made it up to the Tea & Coffee Collective.  The Tea & Coffee Collective has been a place that I have been wanting to try out for awhile.  And since I had the opportunity and time, I decided it was about time.

When I first get there, I found out that I didn’t the change to feed the meter.  I figure just my luck not to have the change avalible.  So I went digging in my car hoping that I would find some.  I was only fortunate to find one quarter so I put that in the meter and then just decided to head in, purchase my coffee, and then ask for change.

The Tea & Collective Collection is a simple laid back storefront.  It reminds me of the simple times and the not in your face fronts that we are use to seeing in other coffee places.  One of the most notable features of the collective is the very large COFFEE letters painted above the store.  When you enter the collective you enter through a actual door.  What I mean by this is that you actually have to turn the knob and then push.  For me it was something that you don’t run into everyday but when I run into one it puts me at ease.  Once inside the collective, you will notice the simple layout.  To your left is a peg wall where local arts and crafts hang in what looks like hand made frames which highlight some of the local goods on the display and on sale.  The bar is located towards the back.

It is at the bar that you place your order.  The menu is simple.  On this visit I ordered a Iced Coffee.  I do love coffee warm but my preference is to have it iced.  The coffee is favorable and strong.  Since I had some time I decided to take a seat at one of the tables and do some writing, thinking, and planning in my very handy always there Moleskine notebook.  I know a lot of people romanticize the idea of writing, sipping on coffee, and sitting in a coffee shop as cool and even hipster.  In the act of doing this it does change your mindset that lets the creative juices flow from your head to paper.

Coffee, a @moleskine, a pen, and ideas. #writing #thought

I sat inside the Tea & Coffee Collective for about 20 minutes just writing some ideas and just taking in the quiet, then I headed off to the meeting.

The meeting was down in Mission Valley.  The meeting is part of the Pricing, Processing, and Profit tour created by Shoot Dot Edit.  It was cohosted by the San Diego SmugMug group.  The toured featured Zach & Jody Gray, Leeann Marie, and Jared Platt.  The one thing that made this tour special was that it was in the home town of the Shoot Dot Edit founders Jared Bauman and Garrett Delph therefore the crew from Shoot Dot Edit came out as well.  The presentations by all of the presenters were awesome, informative, and very business oriented.  Overall a great tour!

After the tour I met up a few friends for Sushi at one of the places down the street from the hotel.  It was a nice meeting and chat about food, health, photography, and just doing some catching up.  Overall it was a good day.  It was also there that I realized that I should just let some things and move on.
